What to expect when moving to New York City

Do you plan on moving to a new city soon?

Two years ago I moved out of New York City and moved to another state. Since I was still working in NYC I was ready to return.  The culture that comes with being a New Yorker is incomparable to other states.

So there I was last year at age 26 looking for a new apartment. Can you guys imagine the level of discipline and tenacity that I had. I was totally focused.  I knew I wanted to move and New York City was the place to be. (Brooklyn of course)

Why Brooklyn and not another borough? I lived in Queens in a sublet with a roommate its was cool but the commute to work would have been longer. Brooklyn was really my other option since its both convenient and familiar to me.

So here are a few things you need to know as an adult looking to move into NYC from another state.

Target Saving: Save and save some more in a allocated account for moving.  Even though you don’t have an apartment yet or even any prospects. Having money saved allows you to feel a bit calmer in this process, especially initially when your looking at the prices (which will get to in a moment). Remember, you do plan on moving eventually, so the funds won’t go to waste.

You are saving for first months rent, deposit and brokers fee. Therefore if the rent is 1,400  you’ll times it by 3 and get $4,200 (the amount you need saved). This doesn’t cover furnishing your home. But if your lucky this covers electricity or gas.

*If you don’t have any funds at all for moving. I suggest aggressively saving at least 6 months before your moving month.

Do your research: Gone are the days when knocking or ringing the superintendents doorbell and asking for a vacant apartment. Oh the good ole’ days. So use the internet; Google, Zillow, Trulia are a few sites I used to find what the going rate is in different neighborhoods.

Brief Move In Check List

  1. Take walks in the neighborhood and if you have a car read all the parking signs. Knowing the date of alternate side parking is important. Make a plan to know when you have to move your care to avoid being fined.
  2. Find out where you can go to grocery shop and get a quick bite to eat when
  3.  Find out your nearest train stations and learn the train lines.

With so many new apartments being built around the city and the increase rate of gentrification. Neighborhoods that were once considered reasonable or low income are no longer. SO GET TO SAVING!

Do you have any tips for moving to a large city?

I wanted to move to New York City. I love the culture, the food scene and the arts which are prominent in the city. I did not end up making the move because of the significant cost of living increase.

What are brokers fees? You have to have someone looking for you? Do they represent you and try to get good deals on rent or something? I have never heard of that before. Thanks for sharing, this is very useful!

they are real estate brokers. They help find people apartments and you have to pay them. This have become popular now whereas when I was younger you got an apartment even a house through word of mouth. Now you pay them.
